| Topographical Description / स्थलाकृतिक विवरण | Once a pointer building of Pampore, the Khadi Ashram stands a little offseted from the national highway, NH-1. Its location by an arterial road that connects to the city ahead explains the landmark status. Placed tangentially to the river Jhelum, the property forms rich panorama of the built form and the green areas. The building has the tehsildar s office as its neighboring property. |
| History / इतिहास | |
| Brief History / संक्षिप्त इतिहास | A century old now, this building was constructed on the orders of Maharaja Hari Singh, the ruler of the state then. Built under the All India Khadi and Village Industries Board , this Khadi Ashram was the first ever Gandhian organization to make its place in the valley. However, post independence a new body, The Khadi and Village Industries Commission Ministry of MSME , took over and this building now comes under their management. The institution had been a source of employment to the residents of Pampore but the disturbed political conditions and the reducing popularity of the product in Kashmir, the number of people presently working in the office is diluted to a mere two employees and zilch production. Many famous personalities are said to have visited the Khadi Ashram including Mahatama Gandhi himself, Indira Gandhi and many others. |
| Local / Traditional description associated with Built Heritage / Site निर्मित धरोहर / स्थल से सम्बंधित स्थानीय/ परम्परागत विवरण |
The town of Pampore has remained a major centre of trade, culture and politics. Also known as land of red gold for its open down clayey karewa soil, home to saffron cultivation for centuries. Saffron cultivation was and still is the prime occupation of the town. The town has given two great Kashmiri poetesses to the valley namely Lala Ded and Habba Khatoon and many other spiritual personalities and hermits. Pampores location at Srinagars doorstep made it witness various political events. This explains the sociological diversity of the town and the probable locale for the first Gandhian organization in the valley of Khadi Ashram. |

| Description of Building/ Structure/Site
इमारत/संरचना/स्थल का विवरण |
Approached through the street that branches from the highway, the east facing front fa ade stretches along the perspective of the street with its two storied structure. The symmetrical main entrance is through a ledged braced door which is set within a traditional timber porch. Its planning is of an orthogonal C shaped block with a symmetric axis. With spaces like offices in the entrance block, the two connected symmetrical blocks on either side consist of handlooms halls and stockrooms. The entire building block embraces a green court which is walled on the fourth side with an entrance door. External staircases from all three side of the block pour into the court. The door on the fourth side of the court leads to an open green ground which forms another complex of buildings. The green compound consists of a ground floor structure on the north containing the dyeing and washing areas. The structure on the west side hosted the pulp processing. The large open space was used for drying. |
