| Local / Traditional description associated with Built Heritage / Site निर्मित धरोहर / स्थल से सम्बंधित स्थानीय/ परम्परागत विवरण |
The town of Pampore has remained a major centre of trade, culture and politics. Also known as land of red gold for its open down clayey karewa soil, home to saffron cultivation for centuries. Saffron cultivation was and still is the prime occupation of the town. The town has given two great Kashmiri poetesses to the valley namely Lala Ded and Habba Khatoon and many other spiritual personalities and hermits. Pampores location at Srinagars doorstep made it witness various political events. This explains the sociological diversity of the town and the probable locale for the first Gandhian organization in the valley of Khadi Ashram. |

| Description of Building/ Structure/Site
इमारत/संरचना/स्थल का विवरण |
Approached through the compound entrance from the east, this eastern front fa ade of the building is of three floors. Unlike other traditional buildings in Pampore, the building has a corner entrance from the north western side. There is a rolling shutter entrance door in the front fa ade which might have been the main entrance previously. The structure has been modified to add two bathrooms right above the entrance. Its planning is different from a typical Kashmiri building and has a staircase at one side of the rectangular plan. The ground floor consists of stores and is used as a go-down. The first floors have two rooms each respectively while the second floor consists of a hall. A small attic above the stairwell exists within the roof profile. |

The principal materials used in the construction of the building are brick, stone and wood, with lime mortar . However, the exterior has been plastered with cement and painted on in recent times. At places, use of maharaji seer can also be spotted under the chipped plaster. The structural system of the building is load bearing with simple rectangular windows on each floor. Ground floor has stone masonry, with brick masonry on the floors above. Floor lines are emphasized by exposed wooden runners and floor joists which are ornately timber carved. Timber bands have been provided at all floor levels which act as a major earthquake resistant feature. The traditional feature of the dub on the front fa ade extends beyond the second floor to a dilapidated timber construction of an attic. The traditional pitched roof covered with CGI sheets are edged with a carved eaves board. |
