| Local / Traditional description associated with Built Heritage / Site निर्मित धरोहर / स्थल से सम्बंधित स्थानीय/ परम्परागत विवरण |
The town of Pampore has remained a major centre of trade, culture and politics. Also known as land of red gold for its open down clayey karewa soil, home to saffron cultivation for centuries. Saffron cultivation was and still is the prime occupation of the town. The town has given two great Kashmiri poetesses to the valley namely Lala Ded and Habba Khatoon and many other spiritual personalities and hermits. Pampores location at Srinagars doorstep made it witness various political events. This explains the sociological diversity of the town and the probable locale for the first Gandhian organization in the valley of Khadi Ashram. |

इमारत/संरचना/स्थल का विवरण |
Approached through the compound entrance from the east, this southern front fa ade of the building is of three floors. Unlike other residences in Pampore, the main entrance door is without a porch but is covered by a wooden dub overhanging from the second floor. Its planning is of a typical Kashmiri house with a backside staircase and a front lobby with rooms on either side. The ground and first floors have four rooms each respectively while the second floor, having the dubs on the south and east, consists of a hall. |

The principal materials used in the construction of the building are stone, brick and wood, with lime mortar . However, cement plastering has been done on the ground floor stone masonry. Stone masonry of the ground floor walls and the quoins on the corners define a distinct colonial influence. Simple rectangular windows surmounted by segmental arches are found on each floor. However, the windows as well as the dub on the second floor have lattice jali work. The structural system of the building is load bearing. Timber bands have been provided at all floor levels which act as a major earthquake resistant feature. The wooden dub is a traditional element present symmetrically on both south and east faces of the building. An eaves board along with ornate pendants adorns the traditional pitched roof covered with CGI sheets. |
