Local / Traditional description associated with Built Heritage / Site निर्मित धरोहर / स्थल से सम्बंधित स्थानीय/ परम्परागत विवरण |
The cultural landscape of the rugged and remote hilly tracts of Jammu is dotted with forts. These forts represent an architectural stream that was born out of a combination of building technologies of Rajputs and the northern frontier of Indian subcontinent. These forts were the abode of local Rajput clans and therefore served as both religious and temporal centres. After the integration of Jammu in larger political and geographical entity, these forts lost their temporal relevance. However the religious sanctity attached to these resulted in their continued importance for the local populace. |

The Hiranagar Fort is mainly constructed in lakhori brick masonry and is almost perfectly rectangular in shape. The 1.5 meter thick fort wall is punctuated by a series of bastions for surveillance purposes. The fort offers excellent views of the surrounding rural landscape because of its elevated position. The approximate area that the fort encompasses is 16, 500sq.m. The main and only entrance to the fort is on the south through a gateway, located next to an enormous bastion. The land within the fort is almost totally flat and leaving aside a few modern constructions, the fort does not consist of any buildings historically significant or otherwise. The other element of interest is a well on the northern edge of the fort and a Kali temple located in the very centre of the fort complex. The well is about 5 meters wide and is in such a derelict condition that it is almost completely hidden behind wild foliage. |
