| History / इतिहास | |
| Brief History / संक्षिप्त इतिहास | Lakhanpur was originally a portion of Jasrota state from which it was severed in the beginning of the 14th century. It was bounded on the north by the Karidhar range separating it from Basoili, on the east by the Ravi. Kalas Dev of Jasrota who ruled about AD 1320 had two sons, Partap Dev and Sangram Dev, and after their father s death, Sangram Dev claimed half the Sate. This was surrendered to him, including all the territory between the Ujh and the Ravi with the capital at Lakhanpur, hence the name of the state. It is a place of much historical importance. Thus Raja Sangram Singh is generally referred to as the founder of Lakhanpur state and therefore the fort. |
| Local / Traditional description associated with Built Heritage / Site निर्मित धरोहर / स्थल से सम्बंधित स्थानीय/ परम्परागत विवरण |
The cultural landscape of the rugged and remote hilly tracts of Jammu is dotted with forts. These forts represent an architectural stream that was born out of a combination of building technologies of Rajputs and the northern frontier of Indian subcontinent. These forts were the abode of local Rajput clans and therefore served as both religious and temporal centres. After the integration of Jammu in larger political and geographical entity, these forts lost their temporal relevance. However the religious sanctity attached to these resulted in their continued importance for the local populace. |
