| Topographical Description / स्थलाकृतिक विवरण | Located at the edge of the town, which itself is located at an elevation. Naaz Nallah flows below the Gateway. The area is verdant and hilly and becomes flooded when the Nallah swells in monsoons. |
| History / इतिहास | |
| Brief History / संक्षिप्त इतिहास | This was supposedly the entrance to Billawar and once the gate was closed, the town remained safe against enemy attacks. Since the town is set on an elevated plain and access to the gate is through a steep flight of steps, it served the purpose well. Billawar is said to have been founded by Raja Bhopat Pal between 16th and 17th centuries and remained the capital of the Basholi Rajas. The town was established on the elevated banks of Naaz and Bhinni Nallahs. It is believed that Billawar was one of the key states of the Duggar Desh apart from Jammu and Poonch. |
| Local / Traditional description associated with Built Heritage / Site निर्मित धरोहर / स्थल से सम्बंधित स्थानीय/ परम्परागत विवरण |
The Shripole gateway is located above the Hanuman-faced rock situated in the middle of the local Naaz Nallah. This rock and the area around it are greatly regarded by the locals because they link it directly to the presence of Hanuman here, at the time of the 14 year exile of the Pandavs. |

The gateway is accessed by means of a high flight of steps and is located on an elevation and is set within the city wall which has over time been completely lost, only collapsed portions of it can be seen at a few places. The gateway is about 3ft thick and has a single opening which is in the form of a recessed arch. Devoid of any decoration, the gateway has a crenellated top and a row of small arches above the opening on the face which is towards the town. |
