| History / इतिहास | |
| Brief History / संक्षिप्त इतिहास | The fort was allegedly built on a foundation laid by Nagaraja Gaur Sen and was also known as Nandini Fort. It was pillaged and burnt in 1294 and eventually taken over by Raja Kehl Dev who repaired the Fort. In 1320, the ruling king of Lakhanpur acquired the fort and the area around it from Kehl Dev. By 1594, the repeated attacks by Mughals diluted the stronghold of Maldev and consequently Samba principality became divided. In 1905 the fort was taken over to accommodate a government school within its premises and has since been operational as a school. . It is said that prominent figures like KL Sehgal and Ustad Allah Rakha were also alumni of this school. Recently ASI has adopted the Fort and has undertaken some emergency repair works on the Fort |
| Local / Traditional description associated with Built Heritage / Site निर्मित धरोहर / स्थल से सम्बंधित स्थानीय/ परम्परागत विवरण |
The cultural landscape of the rugged and remote hilly tracts of Jammu is dotted with forts. These forts represent an architectural stream that was born out of a combination of building technologies of Rajputs and the northern frontier of Indian subcontinent. These forts were the abode of local Rajput clans and therefore served as both religious and temporal centres. After the integration of Jammu in larger political and geographical entity, these forts lost their temporal relevance. However the religious sanctity attached to these resulted in their continued importance for the local populace. |

The fort wall also houses a temple and a water reservoir now dried up . The original main entrance stone gateway with motifs representing lions succumbed and in 1947 it was re-built using the original material. On the west side of the fort is a large water body with a small temple nearby. Locals believe that the western portion of the fort consisted of a palace with decorated passageway and rooms. In 1905, local philanthropist, General Kahajoor Singh requested Maharaja Pratap Singh to donate the fort to the Education Department for housing a school. |
