| Brief History / संक्षिप्त इतिहास | The John Bishop Memorial Hospital was set up in 1902 by Protestant missionaries to provide medical care to the local inhabitants. The money for the hospital was donated by Mrs Isabel Bird, in memory of her husband Dr. John Bishop. According to locals the land for the hospital was donated by the local Muslim community. The hospital is generally referred to as Mission hospital and includes a number of ancillary buildings including a Church. |

The John Bishop Memorial Hospital is a part of the missionary activities undertaken by various Christian organizations in the pre-Independence period for promotion of education and health in the local communities. A number of such institutions were set up in major town of Kashmir, including Anantnag. |

The original hospital building dating back to 1902 comprises a single storey colonial structure aligned along the east-west axis. The main entrance to the building is on the western side from a linear porch running along the length of the building on this side. The porch with its lean to roof and gables is supported on wooden columns. Internally the building could not be accessed. |

The building has been constructed in load bearing rubble stone masonry, though the corners are in brick masonry. The porch as well as the truss is in wood. |
