The house is located in the Reshi bazzar on the main Sher bagh road and comprises of a series of three to four adjoining houses with mixed residential and commercial usage. Many of the houses have shops on the ground floor, which continue to be used for commercial purpose. Over a period of time many of the residents have shifted from the area due to ongoing rapid commercialization. The area is one of the busy commercial spines of old Anantnag town. |

The sprawling Rahat Joo house makes use of the corner plot at a road junction and that gives a characteristic acute angle to the building. The building has four floors with the ground floor having a series of five shops being used for the commercial purposes and the upper floors for residential purposes. The house could not be accessed, however, each floor has a series of window opening each complete with rich pijrakari work. The third floor has the widest windows at the corner. |

The principal materials used in the construction of the building are stone, brick and wood, with mud mortar. The structural system of the building comprises load bearing brick walls with wooden floor joists. Floor lines are emphasized by exposed wooden runners and joists. Internally the floors are covered with sathrun mud flooring in most of the rooms. The building is covered with a traditional pitched roof comprising CGI sheets with ornamental finials at each roof edge. Other decorative elements include roof pendants and carved eaves boards. |
