| Description of Building/ Structure/Site
इमारत/संरचना/स्थल का विवरण |
With its seven floors, the house boasts of being the tallest of all the extant traditional houses in Kashmir. The building has a rectangular layout with a centrally located staircase lobby which, led by a finely decorative doorway. Each floor has four rooms with two rooms on each side of the lobby. The top or the sixth floor has two halls. The ground floor mostly has storage rooms. The building is detached from other properties in the area which make all its four sides clearly visible from the road. The two longer faces of the building are almost similar in appearance with a very noticeable, three storey wooden dub starting from the centre of the third floor as a octagonal box dub, widening as it continues in the form of rectangular dub to the fourth floor and becoming narrow and octagonal again on the fifth floor. Apart from this, on the longer faces, there are also two octagonal dubs on each end second floor. The top or the sixth floor attains the shape of a penthouse with the two halls lifting up as two separate units above the fifth floor. |

The main materials used in the construction of the building are stone, brick and timber. While the ground floor and first floor is constructed in ashlars, all the upper floors are in burnt brick masonry. The structural system of the building consists of load bearing masonry walls laid in mud mortar. Each fa ade has a series of segmental arched windows set within slightly decorative and projecting surrounds. All windows start at floor level comprising carved wooden sills and glazed and paneled window panels. The rooms are replete with khatamband ceilings and fine decorative incised mud plaster. Each floor level is emphasized by a decorative brick frieze band running the entire length. Internally the floors are covered with sathrun mud flooring in most of the rooms. The building is covered with a traditional pitched roof comprising CGI sheets with ornamental finials at each roof edge. Other decorative elements include roof pendants and carved eaves boards |
