| Brief History / संक्षिप्त इतिहास | The building was constructed by Mirza Afzal Beg. According to the owner, the ancestors of Beg family migrated to Anantnag from Srinagar somewhere at the end of 17th century. Members of the family served as zaildars landlowners in the Dogra durbar in the 19th century and were also involved in Kashmir s freedom struggle. |

The Beg family is one of the most prominent families of Kashmir, who have also figured prominently in Kashmirs freedom struggle. The building was constructed by Mirza Afzal Beg, a prominent freedom fighter who also served as a Minister in the state cabinet during Dogra rule. |

The two storey building, constructed in the middle part of the 20th century, can be categorized as a contemporary bungalow of the time. It has a square plan with a central, open, portico on the front and the rear sides. This portico repeats on both floors. The front face however has an additional octagonal corner room going from the ground to the first floor. The entrance verandah or porch is slightly set back from the building line and leads to a spacious lobby which gives access to two rooms on each of its sides. The house is almost entirely constructed in exposed stone masonry with a clear intention of highlighting the quality of stone and workmanship. Services like bathrooms and stores are located on the side, less significant face of the building. |

The principal materials used in the construction of the building are stone, brick and timber. The structural system of the building comprises load bearing masonry walls constructed in cement mortar. The use of timber in case of this building largely remains confined to roof trusses and floor beams and joists. The building facade comprises rectangular window frames within slightly projecting rectangular surrounds. The building corners are emphasized by use of brick quoins which stand out strikingly against the stone walls. The ceiling of the all the rooms comprises katamband. Internally the walls are plastered in cement and the floors are wooden planked on the first floor. The building is covered with a traditional pitched roof comprising CGI sheets and has an additional attic floor. |
