| Brief History / संक्षिप्त इतिहास | The building was constructed by members of the Beg family. According to the owner, the ancestors of Beg family migrated to Anantnag from Srinagar somewhere at the end of 17th century. Members of the family served as zaildars landlowners in the Dogra durbar in the 19th century and were also involved in Kashmir s freedom struggle. |

The Beg family is one of the most prominent families of Anantnag town, who have also figured prominently in Kashmirs freedom struggle. The building is the ancestral house of the family and was constructed by Mirza Ghulam Mohammed Beg in the late 19th century. Mirza Ghulam Mohammed Beg served as a zaildar in the Dogra rule. |

The building comprises a rectangular plan with three storeys, which is aligned along the north-south axis. The access to the building is from the owner s private garden. The main entrance to the building is from a wooden front portico that leads to a centrally located doorway. This open and colonnaded portico, on ground and the first floor, end in a dhajji dewari room on both floors. The front fa ade of the building is also emphasized by a double storey semi-circular glazed and paneled wooden window that starts above the entrance door. The portico ends on the first floor and has a lean-to-roof over it. The entrance leads to a staircase lobby with series of rooms on either side. The building is almost symmetrical with similar layout on each floor. The north face of the building has a continuous cantilever wooden gallery running the entire length of the second floor. |

The principal materials used in the construction of the building are stone, brick and wood, with mud mortar. The structural system of the building comprises load bearing brick walls with wooden floor joists. The front portion of the building which comprise a portico and side rooms at each end are constructed in dhajji dewari. The building facade comprises rectangular window frames within segmental arched masonry openings. Floor lines are emphasized by a decorative band of wooden frieze. The ceiling in the second floor comprises of khatamband and the ceiling in other rooms consists of exposed wooden joist and planks. Internally the walls are mud plastered and the floors are covered with sathrun mud flooring in most of the rooms. The building is covered with a traditional pitched roof comprising CGI sheets. |
