EXCAVATION AT CHINNAMARUR REVEALED DISTRICT MAHBUBNAGAR.-- The Department Archaeology and Museums, Government of Andhra Pradesh conducted excavation Chinnamarur, a chalcolithic site extending to an area of 200 X 100 m revealed a cultural deposit of 90 cm yielding black-on-red, burnis grey, black and red wares, besides polished stone celts, parallel-sided blades, steatite be, copper rings, fish-hooks, querns, pestles and stg horns. Circular house plans appended by pieces were also encountered. An interesting feature of the culture is that the burials inside the habitation as well as outside in a cemetery. One skeleton 1.8 m lying in north-soorientation was found placed over the bed rock in a 20 cm deep pit the cemeted. Although the burial was primary in nature the phalanges were found placed over the having its skull crushed. A vase of burnished grey ware placed on the western side of skeleton as burial furniture. Another burial exposed in the habitation was secondary in nat and was oriented north-east by south-west. A 5- cm long copper arrowhead and a shallow in Black-and-red ware were placed on the north-western side of the skeletal remains and the skull was placed two vases in coarse grey ware. Besides, a saddle quern, pestle and a polish stone -axe came from the burial. Another interesting feature of the site is that the habitation area and the cemetery of chalcolithic people, were subsequently used for similar purposes even by the succeedi megalithic people, thus indicating a time-gap between the two cultures. Among the five oblo burials exposed this season, cist5 , having a skeleton of 1.8 m in length with an iron km 23 cm pierced into the neck, and cist 6, which is transepted into three chambers having port-hole and passage, are noteworthy. The burials yielded iron objects, apart from vases Black-and-red and red wares. |
