| Description of Building/ Structure/Site
इमारत/संरचना/स्थल का विवरण |
The 5-m. deep occupationstrata exposed by this digging were divided into three phases, of which the earlier two were predefence and were distinguished from each other mainly by the absence and occurrence of structures. Peior to the building of the stone defence-wall, baked bricks were seemingly not in use, the structures being built of roughly-dressed stone masonry, for which raw material in the form of the tilted limestone -beds was available in plenty in the vicinity Ring-wells- a cluster of four in a single trench-were also in evidence. The pre-defence. strata did not yield any notable caramic excepting plain wares of both red and grey fabrics. The caramics of Phase III, associated with large walls, included the Red Polished Ware and the kaolin ware. Other notable finds from the site comprised coins, variously of punch-marked and tribal variety, including the Madhyamika and early Kshatrapa, etc., bone points terracotta human and animal figurines in the Sunga and Gupta styles beads other terracotta objects comprising toys and flesh-rubbers am ivory seal with svastika and taurine symbols and copper antimonv-rods and rings . From a study of the finds it would appear that the earliest level of the site did not extend prior to circa 400 B.C., although both on the surface as also sporadically in the lower levels fluted cores and flakes were found. The fortification, built in early centuries of the Christian era, possibly coinciding with the advent of th eGuptas. The incidence of the Northern Black Polished Ware at this site was all but negligible, since no sherd was found in the excavation, although known associated wares were met with in some measure. |
