Khalghat is a small village in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh, situated on the southern bank of the river Narmada in the east of tehsil headquarter Dharampuri at a distance of about 10 kms. Anybody can reach upto the site by own vehicle form Dharampuri.

The site is situated on the bank of river Narmada. The soil of the area is yellowish blackish and undulated land.

The site is archaeologically important, for, it is situated in the ancient Avanti Janapada, The mound at Khalaghat was located in Feb. 1990 during the village-to-village survey of the submergence area of Sardar Sarovar project. Surface exploration yielded black-on-red ware, red ware, black slipped ware, terracotta beads and other objects. Looking to the importance of the site, the Directorate of Archaeology, Archives and Museums, Govt. of Madhya Pradesh conducted an excavation under the supervision of Dr. G.K Chandrol in 1999.

During the excavation the following cultural sequece was observed Period -I Pre Mauram Circa 600 B.C to 200 B.C - This period is covered by layer Nos. 11,12,3, of KGT.-I and same layers of KGT.II, The , iverage deposit of the said perid in KGT,-I is of 60 cm and in KGT,-II it is of 56 cm. The soil is found hard and black cotton. This layer constitutes the first settlement over teh natural soil which has yielded very few antiquities compringing stone balls, shell bangles, terracotta discs and terracotta heads Fregmentary pottery consitutes black- and - red ware, red ware and black slipped ware. In contrast to subsequent layers, ther is complete absence of bone pieces. After layer 13, natural soil s found and in KGT-I natural soil is found after layer 12. Period - II Maurya- Sunga Circa 200 B.C to 100 A.D This period is covered by layers 10 to 4 in KGT . I and 10 to 5 KGT- II . The pottery is as usual of Maurya- Sunga levls of north Indian site, These are red ware of fine, medium and coarse varieties, red slipped ware, black slipped ware, grey ware and micaeeous ware, A good number of sherds and many important shapes beside bowls and dishes have been found in other wares.
