Brief History / संक्षिप्त इतिहास | On the basis of the excavated remains the site belongs to the historical period. The site came to the light in April 1981, when a bowl containing 9 Gupta gold coins and 39 ksatrapa coins were accidentally discovered from a field. |

The department of Archaeology and Museum, Government of Madhya Pradesh, carried out a trial excavation at the site after getting the news of the discovery of gold and silver coins respectively belonging to Gupta and Kshatrapa rulers. Three cultural periods beginning from the Christian era to the tewlfth century were recognized in the excavation. Period I - 1st and 3rd Cen. AD is marked by abundance of red ware represented by conical bowls, sprinklers, medium - size pots, carinated vessels and basins, About 15 to 20 per cent of red ware was treated with bright red slip. A few sherds of black - and- red and black ware were found associated with it. Period -II Fourth to Sixth century is characterized by the presence of shell-bangle, beads, terracotta figurine, whell, flesh-rubber, gold piece and carved soapstone fragments. There is no appreciable change in the ceramic industy of the period expect the presence of miniature pots of black ware. Period -III seventh to Twelfth century is marked by the presence of iron and copper objects along with early and late medieval pottery, mostly represented by grey ware. This is the excavated site. There is no tradition for the same. |
