| Description of Building/ Structure/Site
इमारत/संरचना/स्थल का विवरण |
A representative of indigenous wooden bridges of Kashmir. All the traditional wooden bridges which were built during the 14th century onward were based on the same principle, regardless of their location. Such bridges were constructed by sinking old boats filled with stones at the site for pier foundation. Traditionally when a height above low-water level was reached, deodar trestles were constructed by placing rough hewn logs at right angle. The deodar logs were cantilevered at a height to allow houseboats to pass underneath. This successively reduced the span and huge wooden beams served as girders to support the roadway. The Sopore bridge is 195.68 m long and 4.5 m wide. The bridge rests on three supporting piers and the overall height of the bridge is 18ft. |
