| Brief History / संक्षिप्त इतिहास | The building was constructed by Ghulam Mohammad Bhat in the mid 20thcentury. The owner was a fruit trader by profession. The building was sold to the present owner, Ghulam Nabi Bhat about 15 years ago who is a retired teacher. The building lies in the Ganai Hamam Mohalla. |

The building represents the traditional architecture prevalent in the historic quarters of Kashmir during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Like the historic town of Srinagar, Baramulla is yet another significant town located on the banks of River Jhelum. The principal occupation of the people for many generations has been that of fruit business and therefore the area around the town is seen dotted with many sprawling apple orchards. A number of significant religious places for both Hindus and Muslims are seen in and around the town. |

This structure is a three storey property, with a centrally located entrance which leads to the corridor at the end of which is a wooden staircase leading to the upper floors. The rooms are arranged in a symmetrical manner on either side of the corridor as this was the common spatial layout of traditional Kashmiri residences. The ground, first, and second floor all comprise four rooms each and an additional hall under the truss. The building has two dubs -- one projecting from the second floor and the other one, directly above it, from the attic floor. |

The materials used in the construction of this building are devri stone, burnt bricks, wooden door and window, frames and panels, mud mortar, and lime plaster. The facade of the building is clad in dressed devri stone with brick quoins and window surrounds highlighting the elevation. The dub of the building displays fret- work. Internally the walls are mud plastered except for some rooms in the ground and 2nd floor which have been plastered in cement. The ceiling is made of wooden joists and panels which are covered with beautiful khatamband work. The flooring of the building was originally done in mud sethrun but now it covered with cement tiles. The roof of the building is covered with galvanized sheets with decorative eaves board and ornamental hangings pendants at the ends. |
