The majestic medieval period bunglow used to house the St. Stephen s College from 1891 to 1941 CE. Currently the office of the Delhi State Election Commission is situated here. In 2016, first floor of the heritage building is converted into the Election museum that chronicles the historical electoral journey of the country through various exhibits.The double-storey iconic building was designed by Samuel Swinton Jacob.He incorporated the Indo-persian architectural characteristics with European Neo-classical styles. The Local stone Quartzite has been majorly used for the construction. Red sandstone is used for the ornamentation and to accentuate the architectural elements like windows, ventilators,parapet walls,pillars,drum of the dome,mouldings and other elements.The building is entered through an impressive projected portico which has ornate arched openings on three sides.Both the floors have multiple arched windows and doors.Circular ventilators can also be seen on the facade.Semi-octagonal turret on the corner is topped by a bulbous dome which is placed on an octagonal drum over the eight-pillared pavilion.The heritage building has many other salient features such as arched corridors ,circular staircases,domed pavilions,red sandstone mouldings,medallions on spandrels,stained-glass windows,stone brackets and other elements.The magnificent building is a remarkable example of colonial era building. |
