| Topographical Description / स्थलाकृतिक विवरण | It lies in area between the flood plain of river Yamuna and Delhi ridge. Delhi ridge is a northern extension of ancient Aravalli range. The ridge consists of quartzite rocks and extends from South-East at Tuglaqabad, branching out in places and tapering off in the north near Wazirabad of the west bank of the river Yamuna. |

| Brief History / संक्षिप्त इतिहास | The tank was built on this site during Sultan Alauddin Khalji resign 1296-1316 in the second city of Delhi to meet the water supply needs of the residents of newly built fort at Siri. It was originally known as Hauz-i-Alai after Khilji, but after being excavated the silted tank by Firoz Shah Tughlaq 1351-1388 it was named Hauz Khas. Firoz Shah who ruled from his new city called the Firozabad Feroz Shah Kotla - the fifth city of Delhi erected several monuments now commonly known as Hauz Khas monument complex on the southern and eastern bank of the reservoir. |

The historic tank that we see in the present has been built by the Delhi Development Authority. In the year 1916, an excavation was carried out at its south-east corner which resulted in the exposure of the original flight of steps of local grey stone. These steps were found singularly intact beneath the soil level. The tank was originally of about 700m x 600m x 4m I x b x h . Now the tank size has substantially reduced due to encroachment but it is well maintained in its present state. More recently the Hauz Khas lake and the surrounding park has been actively developed and so called royal lake and the surrounding place is the beautiful lofty place in Delhi to visit. |
