The Residency complex was constructed in 1800 A.D. When Major Kirkapatrick was the resident. The British residency was designed by P. Russel and was supervised by Raja Kanda Swami Mudaliar and the Resident. The cemetry inside the compound contains the graves of Kirkpatrick Mr. Bushby the residents major cameron, Col. Sutherland and the military secretary to the resident. The British residency is the finest example of euro pan architecture in India. The chief entrance has a flight of 22 marble stairs, leading up to a portico formed by 6 corinthian columns. Two crouching lions are seen on either sides of the steps. The portico and cornices are richly carved. The floor is of polished lime plaster. The portico leads into a Durbar hall with 22 columns. The ceiling is covered with paintings and designs. The chandaliers and mirrors and to the magnificance of the Durbar hall. The main residency building is of Georgian style architecture. in the extensive grounds there are quarters which were meant for the assistant to the resident military secretary surgeor and the offices of the resident s escort and other officials.
