Yamuna flood plain. It lies in area between the flood plain of river Yamuna and Delhi Ridge. Delhi ridge is a northern extension of ancient Aravalli range.

The site was originally that of a garden built by Jahanara Begum, the favourite and eldest daughter of Shahjahan in the year 1650 A.D. Princess Jahanara ordered for the construction of a caravan sarai the comfort of Persian and Uzbek merchants coming to the city for business. It is said that Mughal Emperor Shahjahan ones visited the garden with his minister Saadullah Khan. The pristine gardens had overwhelmed him as he quoted renowned poet Amir Khusro Gar Firdaus Bar Ruh-e-Zameenast, Hameenasto hameenasto Hameenast . In the 19th century, the British redesigned the garden.

The large Mughal style garden comprises with some of the British-period fencing and the row of royal palm trees remain. The gardens are a quick reminder that this land originally belonged to Jahanara, Shah Jahan s daughter. At the end of the alleyway of the octagonal pool of fountains and the rectangular gardens lies a circular parapet that supports a pillar on which a statue of Mahatma Gandhi has been installed in the center of the garden. It was initially built with enclosure walls and pavilions comprises with arched dalan and rooms.
