It lies in area between the river Yamuna and Delhi Ridge. Delhi Ridge is a Northern extension of ancient Aravalli Range.

This is one of the earliest British cemeteries in Delhi, Nicholson, who died in 1857, is buried here.The most prominent grave of this cemetery is that of its namesake Brigadier General John Nicholson who was nicknamed the lion of Punjab .

Offering flowers to the graves as a respect to the departed souls are a common sight at the cemetery. Flowers may often be planted on the grave as well, usually immediately in front of the gravestone. Placing burning grave candles on the cemetery to commemorate dead is a very common tradition and it is mostly practiced on All Soul s Day. Placing a small stone on the top of the headstone as a homage to the departed.

The monumental cemetery is a colonial structure and has a sloping, grassy landscape dotted with tombstones. The cemetery is entered through an arched gateway with sloping roofs. Inside roofs, wooden rafter is provided. Inside this complex there are several tombstones, some of them are intricately carved and some are simple. Many of the gravestones and other memorials are of high architectural value. The enclosure wall of the cemetery dates from the time when the cemetery was established. The personal details of the departed are preceded by carefully chosen poems or Biblical verses.
