History / इतिहास
Brief History / संक्षिप्त इतिहास
This is the holy place where Sheikh Nizamuddin attained the pinnacle of spiritual status. The building is said to have been built by an unparalleled devotee Ziauddin Wakeel Mulk also spelled Vakil or Wakil who was a contemporary of Hazrat Nizamuddin. This place was also where he performed the practice of chilla-kashi in which a Sufi secludes him herself from the general population and followers and undergoes extreme penance without water, food or sleep for 40 days continuously while indulging in reverential prayers and commune with the divine. Hence, the name Chilla-Khanqah Nizamuddin . He was also gaining wide popularity and people in large numbers would visit to receive spiritual bounties from him.

The simplistic green-white building which functions as a mosque, given its architectural features like battered walls, wide eaves chajja supported on heavy brackets, lack of ornamentation, unadorned rectangular pillars supporting the arches, these distinct architectural features easily recognizable as Tughlaq. It is constructed on rectangular plan made of rubble masonry. The dalan stands on a chabutra 3.5 m high and consists of a rear chamber behind the vaulted verandas. It is three bays wide pointed arched openings and two bay deep with flat roof. The dado has marble cladding. The small covered portion along its western wall acts as the mihrab and alcoves built along its surface. The marble cladded front courtyard contains three cenotaphs.
