Description of Building/ Structure/Site
इमारत/संरचना/स्थल का विवरण |
The riverfront town of Jhelum in Sopore is defined by a high embankment wall lined with a series of ghats at intersections of each mohalla. The town stretches to about 2.57 kms on both banks of the riverfront. The riverfront and the settlements around are as old as at least 800 years. A number of prominent religious buildings like mosques khanqhas, temples and shrines dot the stretch at various junctions of the river. Abutting each other and lining up the front are linear stretches of residential buildings, three or four storey high. These were originally covered with the birch bark roofs and planted with a variety of flowers. Projecting wooden bays, lattice work windows are some architectural features highlighting the buildings. The front is lined on either side by a number of small doongas houseboats . To access one bank from another a wooden bridge was constructed in the 15th century over river Jhelum. |
