Brief History / संक्षिप्त इतिहास | According to local historical references, the masjid is said to have been constructed by Emperor Aurengzeb in the later part of the 17th century. It is the only largest mosques in the area and is used for various religious congregations like Friday, Eid and Shab prayers. The mosque has been significantly modified in recent years. |

Sopore, a historic town of north Kashmir was founded by Suyya an able engineer of King Avantivarman in 880 AD and was named Suyya-pur. Sopore is another riverfront town spread out linearly on both the banks of River Jhelum. The principal occupation of local population is farming and tending fruit orchards. Much like the Srinagar city, Sopore town is abounded with wooden vernacular buildings. The town is known for its apple and grain productivity and as such still bears a number of granaries and orchards. |

The Jamia Qadim masjid of Sopore is a T-shaped building with the longer, linear side having north-size axis. And measuring around 54m x 22m. The main entrance on the eastern via a modern porch. Internally the building comprises a single hall divided into three longitudinal bays parallel to the kibla west .. The central bay comprises a double height space, with clearstory lighting. Three high spires brangh rise from the three ridge ends of the roof which is hipped type. The materials used in the construction of this building include burnt bricks, cement mortar, wooden door window, frames and panels. The outer face of the building is done in burnt bricks in cement pointing. The building has a central, continuous dub, running the length of the second floor. Internally the building is cement plastered in the ground floor, while as the first and the second floor walls are plastered in mud. The ceiling of the building comprises wooden beams running through and through. |

The principal materials used in the construction of the building are stone, brick and wood, with lime mortar. The plinth is in ashlar masonry, while the superstructure is constructed in brick. The building facade comprises arched modern window openings with glazed window shutters that have replaced the original decorative pinjrakari wooden shutters. The portico has rich carved woodwork in the spandrel of the arches, while the ceiling is in plain tongue and groove planks. The building is covered with a hipped pitched roof comprising CGI sheets, surmounted by a decorative spire or brangh. |
