Sopore, a historic town of north Kashmir was founded by Suyya an able engineer of King Avantivarman in 880 AD and was named Suyya-pur. Sopore is another riverfront town spread out linearly on both the banks of River Jhelum. The principal occupation of local population is farming and tending fruit orchards. Much like the Srinagar city, Sopore town is abounded with wooden vernacular buildings. The town is known for its apple and grain productivity and as such still bears a number of granaries and orchards. |

The property is one of the most dominating in the area. It stands on a large open ground attached to it and is surrounded by a thick perimeter wall. The entrance is from a centrally located staircase lobby which leads to the upper floors. The building has three floors with octagonal dubs on the extreme right and left of the building. The ground floor of the building has five rooms, first floor has five rooms and the second floor has four rooms and a large hall in addition. The corner dubs or towers have conical roof surmounting them. |

The materials used in the construction of this structure include burnt bricks, stone, wooden door window frames and panels. Colored glass can be seen in the dub windows. Trellis work can also be seen in the dubs. Internally the walls are mud plastered. The ceiling is made of wood panels and is designed very beautifully. The use of traditional handmade clay tiles is seen in the interiors. The rooms are large and each is separated by means of elaborately carved wooden screens called varusi. Some of the prominent rooms are also adorned with naqashi work. The rooms are mud plastered on the inside but the external faces of the building have been left exposed to highlight moulded brick bands and corner quoins. Square dubs overhang from extreme ends of the first floor from the front face which continue up and acquire the octagonal shape in the second floor. |
