| Brief History / संक्षिप्त इतिहास | From available historical references as well as local sources it emerges that in the first quarter of the 18th century AD, Reasi was a small independent principality ruled by Sail Rajputs. As such Reasi was a part of the prevailing geo-political landscape of this mountainous regionwhich comprised of numerous small principalities in perpetual warfare with one another for political ascendancy. To protect this small principality a fort, Bhimgarh Qilla, generally known as the Reasi Fort located on a hillock approx 150m. high was initially constructed of clay. Later on one of the heirs of Raja Rishipal Rana, reconstructed it using stone. It was used by the royal family members for taking shelter during emergencies. The construction of a new fort at the site was started by Raja Gulab Singh of Jammu in 1817 and continued till 1841. The construction and consolidation of Bhimgarh fort was further advanced by the advent of Sardar Zorawar Singh. Zorawar Singh Kahluria was born in a village in Bilaspur Kahlur proved himself a true soldier in the endurance of the extraordinary hardship. |

The town of Reasi is largely an agrarian based economy, drained by the mighty Chenab River, and home to many important historical events. Dominated by the robust Bhimgarh Fort, the town is one of the oldest in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and was the seat of the erstwhile Bhimgarh State, and is said to have been established by Raja Bhim Dev somewhere in the 8th century. The town still has strong reminders of its ancient past in the form of little known temples like Bhimsen Devta. |

The Qila has no defined geometric form. There are four major bastions protruding at corners of the fort. All around the fort wall, one can observe a series of slim octagonal abutments to strengthen it. Within the confines of the fort wall, there are a number of structures like temples, water reservoir baoli and a newly constructed municipal water storage tank. |

The thick rampart wall is constructed in stone masonry and laid in rich lime mortar. The walls above free standing walls are in brick facing with inner core in random rubble masonry. All recent repair works have been done in brickwork. The height of the northern wall has also been increased. |
