| Brief History / संक्षिप्त इतिहास | The building which consists of the present day court is said to have originally served as a residential complex haveli . Prior to 1947, when Reasi became a district of Jammu province, the Wazir-e-Wazarat Prime Minister used to hold his offices in the building. However, when the first administrative reorganization of the State was undertaken in 1948 the major part of the then district Reasi was merged with district Udhampur and it was during this time that the building was converted into a court. Although much of the original fabric of the building has either undergone transformation or collapsed, what makes it special is the fact that on 18 July, 1848, Maharaja Pratap Singh was born in one of the rooms of this building. |

The town of Reasi is largely an agrarian based economy, drained by the mighty Chenab River, and home to many important historical events. Dominated by the robust Bhimgarh Fort, the town is one of the oldest in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and was the seat of the erstwhile Bhimgarh State, and is said to have been established by Raja Bhim Dev somewhere in the 8th century. The town still has strong reminders of its ancient past in the form of little known temples like Bhimsen Devta. |

The layout of the building is such that it originally would have been arranged around an open courtyard with an arcaded portico serving as the main frontage. Most of the original portions of the building have been modified and the only portion which has not been tampered with is where the Maharaja was born. The room is accessed via and arcaded verandah and lies at the extreme end of the complex. The walls are thick about 2ft and the room itself is not very large or opulent. The commemorative plaque, inscribed in Persian, which honours the birth of the Maharaja, is embedded in one of the walls of the room. The thick boundary wall running the perimeter of the complex still exists telling of its robust character. It is said that there were originally orchards within the complex and a stream flowing through it which has since dried up and disappeared. |
