| Local / Traditional description associated with Built Heritage / Site निर्मित धरोहर / स्थल से सम्बंधित स्थानीय/ परम्परागत विवरण |
It is said that on the day of the Mahamakam festival which comes once in a 12 years, the holy water of the seven rivers (Ganga, Cauvery, Godavari etc.) make their appearance in the Mahamakam tank. The King Sevappa had daubts regarding this belief. When the particular lagna (auspecious hour) arrived on the Mahamakam day, Govinda Dikshitar with the King by his side, worshipped the Goddesses and droped cocoanuts, flowers and fruits into the water. To the amazment of the King, he saw seven beautiful hands bedecked with jewels rising above the surface of the water and receiving the offerings. In admiration the King presented Govinda Dikshitar with gold equal to the latter's weight. He used this money to build the Veda Pattasala on the serene banks of River Cauvery. Originally the Pattasala was named after Govinda Dikshitar. |
