The fort is believed to have been built by the Bana chiefs of the medieval period. The fort was erected during 13th or 14th century A.D. but by the beginning of the 16th century, but by the beginning of the 16th century, the fort fell into disuse. The original name of the area may have been Ponparapinankottai, Ponparappinan being the title assumed by the Bana chiefs. The above place name was later changed to Ponpanaikottai due to the local belief that a palam-tree bearing golden fruits once existed here. Later the place came to be known as Ponpanaikottai. |
