The structure represents a peculiar synthesis of the Islamic and the Colonial styles of architecture. This huge quadrangular 313ft x 305ft building is erected on a raised plinth. The brick structure is not plastered in the exterior. The ground plan includes a verandah which skirts almost the entire building. Behind the verandah are rows of rooms enclosing a large open central quadrangle. Eight staircases, located at different parts of the building lead to the first floor. These staircases are mostly made of wood and are in the form of a spiral around a brick-built plastered cylindrical column. The ceiling of the entire ground-floor and of the first-floor is of the Madras - terrace type. The parapet of the first-floor balcony is ornamented with domes at regular intervals along the top-railing. Many of the openings in the building are in the shape of round arches. |
