| Brief History / संक्षिप्त इतिहास | This is the largest tank of Pudukkottai town. It has been renovated many times. In late 19th century a series of famines and droughts prompted Sir A. Seshic the Dewan under the Pudukkottai Raja, to repair the tank mainly to use its capacity. It was then estimated that by deepening and widening the tank, it could hold 115 million gallons of water collected mostly the streams. The actual work of repairing and enlarging the tank lasted off for about seven years from 1889 to 1894-95. The enlarged capacity of the tank was enough to provide drinking water to the entire town s population in those days. |

The Pudukulam is situated on an upland or mound rising abruptly from the surrounding plains. The tank is in the shape of an irregular circle with a circumference of 4 kms. On all the four sides, the tank is approached by a series of stone steps, flanked by brick-balusters, plastered. The tank is provided with stone fencing. On the southern bank, are situated the waterworks where water is filtered and pumped to the Machuvadi upland from where it flows to the town by natural gravitation. |
