| History / इतिहास | |
| Brief History / संक्षिप्त इतिहास | The foundation stone for the palace was laid by L.G. Buckley, Political agent for Pudukkottai, on 24th February 1913. The building was designed by Btritish architects but was constructed by Mr Nilakanta Sastriar, an Indian engineer specially appointed for this project. The design of the structure by foreigners was mainly due to the Pudukkottai Raja s excessive fondness for western lifestyle, manners and customs. The building was formally declared opne by Lt. Col. G.G. Crosthwaite, Agent to the Governor-General, Madras States, on 14th September 1929. The first occupant of this new royal residence was Raja Raja Gopala Tondaiman of the local ruling family. |

इमारत/संरचना/स्थल का विवरण |
The present New Palace, is a single, chic, free-standing monument originally designed as a utilitarian two-bedroomed residence for the local Raja and his immediate family. The building consists of the ground, first and second floors and has been erected on a raised plinth. The ground plan includes a rectangular front portico followed by a long verandah behind which are rooms and halls enclosing an open, central, rectangular courtyard housing a fountain. The roofing is of the Madras terrace type. Many of the openings in the building, specially those in the portico are arch-shaped. The stone floor is in certain areas, covered with square tiles depicting geometrical and floral patterns. The other salient features are the well-dressed stone walls and the Moorish cupolas. |
