| Topographical Description / स्थलाकृतिक विवरण | The neighbourhood and the market preceding it is spread out on a flat land and is also not well vegetated. The neighborhood is close-knit with houses sharing walls. Much of the historic character of the neighbourhood has changed and whatever is left is rapidly changing, yet the characteristic feature of the area is the traditional shops facing the street, which all the houses have. |

| Brief History / संक्षिप्त इतिहास | The Purana or Muslim Market is said to be the oldest in the town of Reasi and was established in the late 19th century. Most of the traders were Muslims and the market was known for the sale of superior dry fruits and other commodities. The main items on sale in the market were walnut, ghee, rajama, morels, and banafsha. The market used to be busy with hundreds of people coming from neighbouring towns and cities. This supposedly was also the main road for travelling into Reasi and thus made the business more active. After partition, the main route was changed and the importance of the market declined and it lost its importance. |

The town of Reasi is largely an agrarian based economy, drained by the mighty Chenab River, and home to many important historical events. Dominated by the robust Bhimgarh Fort, the town is one of the oldest in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and was the seat of the erstwhile Bhimgarh State, and is said to have been established by Raja Bhim Dev somewhere in the 8th century. The town still has strong reminders of its ancient past in the form of little known temples like Bhimsen Devta. |

The linear stretch of street has a series of shops facing the road on both sides. These are single storey buildings with interesting deeply recessed arched fronts consisted by most of the shops that still exist, albeit in poorly maintained state. The shops have large wooden shutters and corbelled bands on the outer surface of the ceiling level. Most of the shops are in a deteriorated and abandoned condition, yet the whole character of the street is a reminder of its past glory. |

The main building material used in the construction is brick and timber used for ceiling , the walls are plastered with lime. The features of decoration worthy of attention include the arched incisions on all the wall surfaces which surround the courtyard and the arcaded verandah. The ceiling level has a band of brick corbelling which also adds to the external ornamentation of the house. |
