| Topographical Description / स्थलाकृतिक विवरण | The Bhimsen Devta temple is located in a small hamlet by the name of Madi a short distance away from the main town of Reasi. The village retains its rural charm and is surrounding by woodlands and many rivulets. The houses are not many but each house seems self-sufficient and is agrarian-based. |
| History / इतिहास | |
| Brief History / संक्षिप्त इतिहास | The wooden deity, sheltered inside a single storey temple is of Bhimsen Devta, which according to the caretaker of the temple depicts Bhima from the epic Mahabarta. It is said that an elderly man discovered the deity floating in the Chenab River about 300 years ago, which was revealed to him in his dream. He brought the deity to Madi and constructed a temple around it. The temple livens up in June every year when jatra is conducted in the premises. |
| Local / Traditional description associated with Built Heritage / Site निर्मित धरोहर / स्थल से सम्बंधित स्थानीय/ परम्परागत विवरण |
The town of Reasi is largely an agrarian based economy, drained by the mighty Chenab River, and home to many important historical events. Dominated by the robust Bhimgarh Fort, the town is one of the oldest in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and was the seat of the erstwhile Bhimgarh State, and is said to have been established by Raja Bhim Dev somewhere in the 8th century. The town still has strong reminders of its ancient past in the form of little known temples like Bhimsen Devta. The various architectural styles speak of the towns many historical layers. Architecturally and culturally, the town is one of the richest but less explored regions of Jammu and Kashmir. |

इमारत/संरचना/स्थल का विवरण |
The temple of Baba Bhimsen Devta is located on a hilly terrain and the only means to access it are the stone paved steps which are connected to the main village road. The stones used for constructing these steps are chunky and large and the joints have been filled with smaller pieces of stone. These steps are as old as the temple and have eroded considerably over the years. |
