| Local / Traditional description associated with Built Heritage / Site निर्मित धरोहर / स्थल से सम्बंधित स्थानीय/ परम्परागत विवरण |
The town of Reasi is largely an agrarian based economy, drained by the mighty Chenab River, and home to many important historical events. Dominated by the robust Bhimgarh Fort, the town is one of the oldest in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and was the seat of the erstwhile Bhimgarh State, and is said to have been established by Raja Bhim Dev somewhere in the 8th century. The town still has strong reminders of its ancient past in the form of little known temples like Bhimsen Devta. The various architectural styles speak of the town s many historical layers. Architecturally and culturally, the town is one of the richest but less explored regions of Jammu and Kashmir. |

| Description of Building/ Structure/Site
इमारत/संरचना/स्थल का विवरण |
Most of the front walls of the building have collapsed and only the rear portion remains partially intact. While it is uneasy to ascertain the exact form and layout of the building, the footprint reveals that it was entered via a vestibule which led to an open courtyard on its one side and rooms were arranged around this court. The building was single storey with elaborate detailing around door and window openings. |

A free standing portion of the wall exposes the interesting construction technique. It employs timber struts with masonry infills in such a manner that there are alternating layers of dressed dry stones and two rows of lakhori bricks. The walls are constructed of lakhori bricks with lime mortar. The windows are segmental with moulded brick surrounds. The existing portico of the only intact portion of the building has a series of pointed columns which is crowned by a corbelled frieze band at the slab level. Some arched openings are also cusped in shape. The ceiling is constructed in timber. Another interesting feature of the building is the vertical rain water gutter running the wall surfaces. |
