| History / इतिहास | |
| Brief History / संक्षिप्त इतिहास | Sheesh Mahal was built between 1930 and 1932 for Rani Utelia by Raja Jagdev Singh, his deceased brother Sukhdev Singh s wife. The design and construction of the palace was carried out by Mehta Labu Ram Mohan, who was the court s official building contractor. The masons were brought from Mirpur. The handmade ceramic tiles used in the interiors were acquired from the Richard and Richard Company of England. Rani Utelia planted a Chinar tree at the entrance to the Mahal which still exists but never really resided here as she preferred living in Baldev Mahal. The Mahal was finally passed on to Raja Chatter Dev Singh, Raja Sukhdev Singh s youngest brother. After the partition it was temporarily used by the Army but was later converted to a school. |
| Local / Traditional description associated with Built Heritage / Site निर्मित धरोहर / स्थल से सम्बंधित स्थानीय/ परम्परागत विवरण |
The area was one of the most affected ones during the Indian partition of 1947 and was badly destroyed in the earthquake of 2005. These events have therefore left a permanent and prominent impression on the people and also the urban fabric of the area and add, in unique ways, to the cultural essence of the place. |
