| Local / Traditional description associated with Built Heritage / Site निर्मित धरोहर / स्थल से सम्बंधित स्थानीय/ परम्परागत विवरण |
The area was one of the most affected ones during the Indian partition of 1947 and was badly destroyed in the earthquake of 2005. These events have therefore left a permanent and prominent impression on the people and also the urban fabric of the area and add, in unique ways, to the cultural essence of the place. |

| Description of Building/ Structure/Site
इमारत/संरचना/स्थल का विवरण |
The neighbourhood is closely built with most of the properties being two storey high. The original colonial-vernacular mixed character of the houses has eroded over the time as most of the houses exist in modified states with an additional floor constructed above. The houses, nevertheless, still retain some of their original architectural characteristics. The houses generally are entered through an elaborate arched gateway and have a foyer with a staircase on one side and water tank on the other. The foyer leads to an open courtyard with rooms arranged around it. The houses were mostly covered with double pitched roofs which were edged by series of narrow and pointed dormer windows. The fa ade consisted of projected jharokhas and carved wooden decorative frieze bands and eaves boards. |
