| Topographical Description / स्थलाकृतिक विवरण | The property is located within the closely built neighbourhood of Saran Poonch which is on an elevated and slightly undulating site. The area is lush with trees and is surrounded by mountains with the LOC being only about a kilometer air-mile away. |

| Brief History / संक्षिप्त इतिहास | The property was used as a sarai or halting place for people travelling via Poonch to other parts of the undivided India. During partition this property served as a refugee camp for people migrating from Pakistan. Many of the refugees continue living in the building as permanent residents. The Sarai as of today has been divided into several smaller parts and leased out to the residents as private units. After the destruction caused by the earthquake the resident families were allowed to make changes to the building. Presently about 17 families reside in the building. The neighbourhood is called Saran or sarai because of the one-time prominent Sarai here. |

The area was one of the most affected ones during the Indian partition of 1947 and was badly destroyed in the earthquake of 2005. These events have therefore left a permanent and prominent impression on the people and also the urban fabric of the area and add, in unique ways, to the cultural essence of the place. The Sarai in particular is said to have been the hub of social activities before 1947 |

The complex which covers an area of 5 kanals or 2530 sqm, takes the form of a square courtyard. The centrally located gateway defines the entrance to the complex. The gateway is highly decorative in quality but has deteriorated considerably. Two rooms flank the central gateway and were originally used as watchmen chambers. There were about 44 rooms in the single storey building, arranged around the square open courtyard, which were over time extended and added upon to make room for the growing families. Much of the original form and fabric of the complex has disappeared and the only remainder which tells of the exquisiteness of the building is the gateway and some portions of walls. |

A mix of materials has been used to construct the building from lakhori bricks and modern bricks to stone masonry. The other material which has been significantly used is timber. The entrance deodi has a cusped arched profile which has a recessed wooden door. The gateway has decorative plaster relief. The original window and door openings were all segmental arched with paneled shutters. |
