| Brief History / संक्षिप्त इतिहास | The temple is dedicated to the goddess Shail Putri who, according to mythological beliefs, is one of the nine sisters one of which is the Mata Kheer Bhawani. Shail Putri remained unmarried all her life and therefore is considered with much reverence by devotees. Only unmarried girls are allowed to clean the main temple chamber where the diet is placed. |

Like the historic town of Srinagar, Baramulla is yet another significant town located on the banks of River Jhelum. The principal occupation of the people for many generations has been that of fruit business and therefore the area around the town is seen dotted with many sprawling apple orchards. A number of significant religious places for both Hindus and Muslims are seen in and around the town. |

The humble temple is laid out around a natural spring and consists of the main square chamber, placed within the square pool and a circumambulatory space parikrama around it. The temple is a single storey structure. Most of the temple was rebuilt in 1994 after it was damaged in the 1990s. |
