| Brief History / संक्षिप्त इतिहास | The building belonged to Ghulam Mohammad Bhat who, by profession, was a dyer in this area and had his business established within the house. Therefore the building served as a residential-commercial mix property. The building was constructed in early 20thcentury. The house was sold to Shamas-u-Din Khan twenty years ago. The present owner is a shop keeper by profession. |

Like the historic town of Srinagar, Baramulla is yet another significant town located on the banks of River Jhelum. The principal occupation of the people for many generations has been that of fruit business and therefore the area around the town is seen dotted with many sprawling apple orchards. A number of significant religious places for both Hindus and Muslims are seen in and around the town. |

This property has three floors and an attic floor. The entrance is from the centre of the building in the ground floor. The ground floor has four rooms placed on either side of the centrally placed corridor, at the end of the corridor is the staircase leading to the upper floors. The first floor has five rooms and the second floor has four rooms. The attic floor in cooperates a hall and two small rooms. A wooden dub projects out from the centre of the second floor. |

The materials used in the construction of this Kashmiri traditional house are devri stone for plinth burnt bricks for walls, and deodar wood for door window frames and panels. Mud mortar is used for the construction of the superstructure and timber for floor joists and boards. The ground floor of the building is done in devri stone with brick quoins border. The first and the second floor are constructed in burnt bricks. The fa ade of the building was actually pointed in mud, which now has been recently pointed with cement. The fa ade of the building has two wooden carved fascias running at each floor level. The dub displays pinjrakari work in the upper panels. Ornamental pendants can be seen hanging from the extreme ends of the eaves boards and also the dub. Internally the walls are plastered with cement, but according to the owner this has been done recently replacing the original mud render. |
