| Brief History / संक्षिप्त इतिहास | The site was first described by Foote 1916a,b . Subsequently V.D.Krishnswami 1938 and Paterson 1939 located the site on the terrace TD of the river Kortalliayar, i.e. 100 high terrace, with the river dissecting the cliffs between Poondi and the adjascent uplands of Rangapuram. They noted artefacts on the surface of the lateritic conglomerate, which was coarse. Lower down to the north of the village of Poondi, they noted a pebbly lateritic gravel which might have represented vestiges of Terrace T2. This was overlain by a lateritic gravel containing detrital lateritie and quartzite boulders with Acheulian tools in different stages of manufacture, and which were very fresh. The overlying lateritic clay had identical tools. The site was marked by an Acheulian industry with an underlying redeposited earlier Acheulian industry. It was later studied by S.Pappu 1996,2002 and Pappu et al. 2010a,b,c 2011b . |

Artefacts occur over the entire area currently occupied by the modern town, wherever ferricrete gravels are exposed. In a well section noted here, 20 cm of cobbly-pebbly gravels which overlie the artefact bearing horizon comprising around 30 cm of ferricrete gravels. These in turn rest on dark brown silty-clays which overlie another coarse ferricrete gravel around 1 m thick, which rests disconformably overlying the Sriperumbur shales. |
