The stratigraphy noted in a quarry section comprises Sriperumbudur shales which are disconformably overlain by a 1.5 m thick depsoit of ferricrete gravels. The area forms a continuum with Poondi. Artefacts collected eroding out of this, range in age from Acheulian to Middle Palaeolithic. At a distance of 100 m from the section described, to the southwest at Poondi quarry, the ferricrete gravel is around 20 cm thick and rests disconformably on a ferricrete which is around 65 cm thick, which in turn grades into a yellowish shaley-clay which grades into shales. Artefacts were found eroding out of the ferricritised gravels. No artefacts were noted in the ferricretes here. About 100 m to the east in a tank section studied between Neyvelli and Valluvarnattam, 1 m thick ferricrete gravels were noted overlying a ferruginous clay with pebble-cobble sized clasts and calcrete nodules. Tools were noted eroding out of the ferricritised gravels although a few were embedded in the clay. |
