| Description / विवरण | The image is badly mutilated; the arms, body and part of the head-dress are missing. She wears a beaded collar, earrings of pearl tassels, and a head-dress consisting of a twisted roll of pearl-encrusted cloth. Above it is a heavy ‘bonnet’, the sides of which consist of hachured panels terminating in four-petaled rosettes. The top of the ‘bonnet’ flares out above the head in what may have been a hood like shape. Above the left shoulder rises a sheaf bound by a pearled rope. This type of head-dress is seen on several female figures from Mathura. One of these (Vogel, La sculpture de Mathura, Pl. XL, p. 47) is identified by Vogel as the queen of the Nagis. This is, however, far from certain in as much as various other female Divinities including Parvati and Laksmi (Mathura Museum Nos. 15.879, 2660) have similar ‘bonnets’. |
