| Description / विवरण | The slab has been broken at the top and the faces of the figures damaged. The Buddha is seated cross-legged, in dharmacakra mudra, on a Large lotus raised from the lake by the Naga kings Nanda and Upananda who flank the central stalk which emerges from a foliated nodule of a type often depicted at Sarnath. Cf. Rosenfield, “On the Dated Carvings at Sarnath,†Artibus Asiae, XXVI, 1 (1963), pp. 10-26, Fig.2. From the central lotus issue seven more flowers, three on either side and one on top, each supporting images of the Buddha who is reputed to have multiplied himself into innumerable forms on this occasion. Thus on the top is the Buddha seated in dhyana mudra flanked by two standing images both damaged; then a pair of seated Buddha images, the one to the proper right in bhumisparsa and the one to the left in abhayamudra; below, on a level with the visvapadma are a pair of standing Buddha images. At the base, to the proper right, are three badly damaged figures, including a corpulent person seated on a stool, probably representing the heretical Tirthakas. In the opposite corner is another group of figures, one of them seated on a cushion and to be identified with King Prasenajit, in whose presence the miracle was performed. Behind the king is the trunk of an elephant in front of which stands a male attendant. |
