| Description / विवरण | The face and part of the turban of the Yaksa on the left are damaged Pl. XXXII, 79a . The hands, in anjali mudra, are pressed against the chest. He stands on a makara, feet turned to the side. The dress is similar to Cat. 70 and 71 from Kausambi but in addition to the long necklace, a small collar and an upper garment are also present. The turban, too, is a little smaller and not as heavy while the bulbous projection is in the center rather than on the side. The Yaksa on the other face of the railing Pl. XXXII, 79b stands on a dwarflike figure and is almost identical. The work is in higher relief than what is observed at Bharhut but the angular outline and cubical form, characteristic of the sculpture there, persist. The two remaining sides have mortices for receiving three cross-bars. The post is apparently referred to in Cunningham, The Stupa of Bharhut, London 1879, p. 13 and illustrated in Pl. V of the same publication. He claims to have discovered it and another post in the same style in two villages near Bharhut. Cunningham believes that they belonged to an outer railing which surrounded the main railing, but the existence of the former is quite uncertain. The post was collected by the Allahabad Museum from Nagod. |
