| Description / विवरण | In this relief Durga or Mahishamardini is flanked by extant relief of seated Ganesha to the right and her mount lion to the left.The eroded relief at the centre depicts Durga in the act of slaying the demon Mahisha depicted in zoomorphic form.She is four handed. The two upper hands to the right and left holds chakra and samkha respectively whereas the right lower hand is piercing the trident to the neck of the buffalo demon and the left hand holds the head firmly.Her left leg is probably stamping the tail of the animal and slightly bent right leg rests firmly on the ground.The whole composition reveals, she is in full control of the fierce act.Her braided mat is held by a band to form a conical tuft at the top. She is bedecked with ornaments viz., karnakundalas,vakshahara, skandhamala, keyura and nupura.Her antariya is held by a elabotrate katibandha with a knot resting on the right trunk.Face ,bosom and hands are damaged.Her celetial mount lion is shown with upturned tail in relief to her left.The extant part of Ganesha seated on lotus in sukhasana holds lotus in his left hand.On stylistic grounds image may be ascribed to the Rashtrakuta period. |
