| Description / विवरण | This is a decorative member used as facing of shikhara portion of a temple. This gavaksa pediment is decorated with a chaitya arch with elaborate foliage emanating from the mouth of kirtimukha at the apex and terminates on either side. kirtimukha is depicted with two protruded eyes with spiral like eye brows which terminates at the apex in conical shape resembling horns, two short ears set sideways at the top,wide nose with nostrils,two fangs arranged sideways and wide opened mouth all adding to the ferocious look of the mythical animal motif. A thin bead designed strip which emanates from the mouth of kirtimukha is noteworthy. In the central depression of arch a relief of full blown flower lotus is depicted.On stylistic grounds this relief may be ascribed to early-chalukyan period. |
