| Description / विवरण | This is an unique terracotta piece depicting a man in the round. The figurine has a helmet on his head, instead of the elaborate turbans popular at Chandraketugarh. The man is further depicted as carrying a dagger or a sword, which rests on his shoulder. It is possible that this is the depiction of a soldier or a guard and it reminds one of the Roman guards depicted in the art of Amaravati and Nagarjunakonda. Early terracotta recovered from Tamluk in Southern Bengal, too has yielded men sporting helmets. These figures have generally been taken as indication of interaction of the region with distant regions and different ethnic groups. |
